Abstract

Whilst researching the participation of young people, the available institutional environment for young people’s participation should also be taken into account. In spite of popular discourses of meritocracy and the importance of self-invention, young people’s opportunities are still very much shaped by the resources offered by their local environments: families, schools and neighbourhoods proving that "citizenship" and "community" are closely related concepts. What are those political structures, processes and debates that marginalize young people and which are successful attempts (local projects, civic, educational programs) to increase engagement through new forms of participation? How can local democracy help young migrants to better understand politics and to increase their motivations to participate? The panel invites papers to elucidate how different institutional arenas of participation in local politics effect young people and immigrants, and how these groups get involved in new forms of political participation.
