Abstract

The scholarship on populism has come a long way. While the European radical right has previously received most attention, recent contributions have broadened the focus to populist parties of the centre and the left. Furthermore, contemporary research on populist parties has strenuously attempted to move beyond the study of the ‘usual suspects’ of the West and introduced alternative explanations for their electoral performance. This panel expands on this current trend and contributes to updating our understanding of the fortunes of populist parties through the lens of changing party political strategies, societal demands, and political opportunity structures.
