Abstract

In many European countries populist parties of both the left and the right have taken a prominent place in the political arena. Their spectacular recent rise in various European member-states and polls indicates that populist parties could become the largest parties in some legislatures. This urges us to (re)examine the causes and consequences of the popularity of these populist parties in terms of voter motivations, public opinion and political behavior. The aim of this panel is therefore twofold: (1) it addresses new explanations for the contemporary populist (radical left and right) emergence in some European countries, and (II) it examines whether and how these parties affect the political attitudes, opinions and behavior of the Western and Eastern European citizenry.
