Abstract

One of the most pressing issues to be resolved in the twenty-first century is that of gender based violence and gender inequality. This panel discusses gender based violence and gender inequality, as well as female candidate selection by political parties in the form of quotas and, finally, the gendered nature of the wage gap. These topics will provide a diverse approach to the broader field of gender politics. Specifically, this panel explores gender inequality in the form of wage gaps, which can be considered a taboo topic. This is a common and very problematic component of gender inequality. This panel will also discuss Indian women’s movements in the face of state sponsored violence against women. In addition to being a welcomed insight into resistance against gender based violence, this will provide valuable insight into a geographic region that, according to Wibbels (2007), is covered in only one third of political science articles. Also included will be a discussion of UN policies on the relationship between the reduction of gender inequality and the reduction of levels of violence. A further topic within this panel is a very interesting discussion on how Russian and Serbian feminists construct themselves in relation to Westocentric feminism. A very perceptive paper on the selection behavior of political parties in local elections vis-à-vis gender quotas will also be presented. All of these thought-provoking papers will add valuable insight into the different forms of gender inequality that exist.
