The numerous crises that the EU has confronted over the last few years suggest the existence of a double deficit at the heart of its institutional structures. On the one hand, the EU is increasingly seen as lacking the democratic legitimacy required to decide and implement policy. On the other hand, the EU is viewed as lacking the competence to deal with the problems it is confronted with in an equitable manner. Hence, this panel aims to bring together scholars who are interested in what may be called EU’s double normative deficit. The panel particularly welcomes contributions that wish to link normative international political theory to EU policy as well as to current debates on the scope and competences of EU’s institutions.
