The current crisis for Europe’s security order holds many different dimensions. This can be illuminated fully when considering the challenges of those perhaps most exposed along the continent’s various peripheries. Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the subsequent Ukraine crisis have prompted a number of states in Europe’s north to reconsider their military security arrangements. However, military issues comprise just one important aspect. Efforts to manage the refugee crisis flowing from civil wars in North Africa and the Middle East have sometimes been met with resistance from some states in south-east Europe. Securitizations in this context are to be found in the societal sector. Other non-traditional security challenges such as energy security and the policing of divided societies continue to accumulate resonance for Europe’s east and beyond. This panel will closely examine the security problems faced along the European periphery from a multi-faceted perspective.
