This panel examines some of the ethical, normative and conceptual aspects of equality. The question of equality and its implications for justice continues to occupy political theorists. This panel offers an opportunity to examine some of the questions that persist in egalitarian theory, such as sexual and racial inequalities, equality of opportunity, the currency of egalitarian justice and the justification for moral equality. Topics include statistical discrimination and its implications for racial and gender inequality; perfectionism as a framework for equality in human flourishing; a critical analysis of the basis for moral equality, and the legitimacy of blocking certain opportunities vis-à-vis freedom of choice. Contributions will offer an opportunity to examine in depth the different dimensions of equality, to interrogate its normative implications in theory, and its implications for justice-based policy implementation.
