Abstract

Why do parties focus on the issues that they do? This panel addresses the causes of stability and change in political parties’ policy positions as well as the emergence of new issues in their strategic policy toolkit. Papers in this panel examine a number of factors that allow us to understand how political parties capture and address different policy issues, including the issue yield model that theorises how different parties perceive electoral risks and opportunities; the role of party structural transformations such as organisational change; party electoral support; government status; and new communications strategies.
