Abstract

Research on the mediatisation of politics and on the use of media practices by political actors, including social movements, is an already well-established field of research. A broad community of scholars is moving between the two fields, investigating the interactions between media and contentious politics. This panel aims to contribute to a new agenda on this issue: how are the changes in media ecologies interacting with the evolution of social movement dynamics? The panel focuses in particular on the representation of social movements in mass media, both in terms of coverage and framing, and on the agency of activists in an evolving technological landscape.
