Abstract

Although the fields of research on social movements and political parties have been rarely interacting in the past, the tendency seems to have recently changed. In the last ten years many researchers have been focusing on the reciprocal interaction between movements and parties, on the phenomenon of “movement parties” and on other processes. This panel aims to bring together scholars working on the relationship between social movements, political parties and governmental institutions. How do movements and parties compete, cooperate and interact? What is the relationship between the electoral and protest arenas?
