Abstract

This Panel focuses on the uses of litigation in contentious politics with particular reference to anti-discrimination policy and environmental policy. It considers the strategies and the actors involved in legal mobilization with particular reference to social movement organizations. Its focus includes the trajectory of EU equality legislation and assesses its effectiveness in providing protection against xenophobia and racism. It considers factors that facilitate access to court for collective actors acting in support or on behalf of victims of discrimination. In this context, and with particular reference to the EU level, it focuses on types and levels of resources available to civil society groups promoting forms of judicial activism.
