Abstract

The popular uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa (Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Jordan, Bahrain and now Syria) since early 2011 had their impact beyond their national borders. The reverberations of the uprisings continue to be felt not only throughout the Middle East region and its neighborhood, but also in major international capitals. Amidst this period of indeterminacy, there is a growing wave of scholarly interest for understanding the causes, characteristics and the future of the events. This panel calls for our attention to the impact these events generate beyond their national borders. In this respect, this panel offers a critical and in-depth focus on the impact of these events over the neighbouring countries (e.g. Iran, Russia, Turkey), major international actors (e.g. USA, China, European Union). This panel is built around a number of key questions that arise from the ongoing set of events. These questions include, but are not limited to balance and shifting alliances among these actors, the role and importance of strategic, economic, sectarian and other factors in determining these alliances. The panel welcomes the use of different international relations theories in their account. While this is a period of indeterminacy in the region and it is too early to make definitive generalisations, the fluidity is also an opportunity for scholars to provide fresh insights into current events. It is, therefore, timely and imperative that we monitor these events closely for their implications, which will doubtless enrich our understanding of the ongoing revolution.
