The resurgence of populism has hung over Latin America, Europe, U.S., Asia and elsewhere more than before. Some advanced democracies such as France, Italy and Germany have faced serious challenges of the populist parties and leaders in the government or parliament. In fledging democracies, populist leaders while in government did undermine the liberal order of democracy and even slid into authoritarianism such as Hungary and Turkey. Populism poses a potential threat to some democratic countries. This panel offers the state of art and perspectives on populism and aims to parse the causal mechanism between populism and its effects.
