Populism and Democracy: An Analysis of Populism's Outcomes

Long considered a danger for democracy, in part of the literature the relationship between populism and democracy has been partially reassessed, with populism being viewed more positively. In this paper, drawing on examples from different cases, particularly from Latin America, I highlight problematic aspects of populism that go beyond its generally recognized negative impact on liberal institutions. I argue that, once these problems are taken into account, the recently recognized positive effects of populism appear as less evident.
