Identity and Global Nuclear Futures

Abstract

The study of nuclear politics is no longer dominated by strategic and materialist paradigms; the field has opened up to ideational variables in understanding nuclear decision-making. Nonetheless, the issue of identity has been largely neglected. This panel seeks to rectify this by uncovering the different ways that identity shapes nuclear proliferation, nonproliferation and disarmament. How do individual elite and group identities influence the understanding of "nuclear" and its value to a state? How do discourse and identity interact to promote or undermine proliferation on the national and system level? Can conflicting identities within a regional spark a nuclear arms race? To what extent do global identities polarise global nuclear negotiations, and can the creation of cross-cutting identities help bridge the gaps?
