Abstract

This panel discusses the different new institutional structures that have been created since the start of the sovereign debt crisis, in particular the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), the banking resolution regime and whether more social policy is needed to deal with inequalities. The questions raised here are those related to democratic legitimacy, regional inequality and subnational identities as well as long-term sustainability of these institutional structures.
