During the past decade, international organizations (IOs) have experienced various crises. From populist sentiments, culminating in member-state withdrawals, over challenges from rising powers, to organization-specific scandals, the past decade was characterized as a state of crisis in international organization. This panel brings together research on the causes and consequences of this situation. We seek to instigate a conversation among scholars interested in questions of whether and why crises have become the “new normal” in IOs, how IOs try to mitigate crises, and how crises shape the institutional design and practices of IOs.
