Abstract

Which visual icons or narratives of protest and solidarity migrate across countries, inspiring participation and coalitions, while also mediating and spreading trans-national imaginaries of citizenship or contentious politics through digital networks and platforms? This panel brings into dialogue critical research on media, migration and social movements focusing on migrating images. Migrating images are created and digitally spread by media actors, protesters, citizens and migrants or refugees, in order to give visibility to actions of solidarity and expressions of political voice and protest. We invite papers discussing the constraints of digital affordances and platforms as well as face-to-face group styles, cultural habits, and political contexts discussing conditions and constraints of protest, mobilization and participation
