Abstract

This paper focuses on politically engaged artists in post-Communist Moldova, in particular the work of the controversial playwright Nicoleta Esinencu, and the official and unofficial responses to that work, in order to investigate the modes and motivations of artistic witness in this setting, and to evaluate its significance for identity formation, conflict resolution, and the evolution of civil society.
