Abstract

This panel explores the politics and ethics of artistic witness, broadly conceived. It focuses on artists of various kinds, in various contexts - often in conflict or post-conflict situations - and also on what they are creating: the art as well as the artists. It examines the role of the artist as 'moral witness', in Avishai Margalit's formulation, and the potential of the work of art itself to act as a kind of witness. It attends closely to what artists themselves have to say about these matters.
