Inclusion, Exclusion and Intersectionality - Gendered participation in Anti-austerity protests

Despite extensive scholarship of social movements in general and women's movements in particular, the participation of men and women in social movements is rarely compared and we still lack quantitative studies on this comparison. The global financial crisis has affected men and women differently due to their different position in gender segregated labour markets. However, labour market and political participation across Europe differs widely and countries have been differently affected by the financial crisis. How did this affect gendered participation in anti-austerity protests? Drawing on a data set of protest events in Europe, out paper explores the diversity of participants across countries and issues. Our paper contributes to the question how diverse are gendered social movements across Europe? To what extent are issues of race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, nationality, and ability addressed?
