Abstract

During the past two decades, the EU has invested considerably in expanding its gender equality policies and in fostering transnational alliances among Europeans to promote equality agendas. Yet old inequalities persist as new ones arise, in particular along the intersections of class, gender, ability, LGBTQ and ethnicity. In response, social movements across Europe face strategic decisions about whether, how, and with whom to create stronger alliances or form temporary coalitions in order to fight these intersecting inequalities. With this panel, we aim to contribute to a more rigorous application of intersectional analysis to the study of gendered social movements in the European Union in response to the on-going economic and refugee crises. Unpacking the various factors that facilitate (or inhibit) intersectional alliances in and between movements from the subnational to transnational context will shed light on current challenges of gendered activism in the EU. The papers on the panel consider a number of questions including: How diverse are feminist/women’s/gendered social movements across Europe? In what ways have social justice groups that mobilize around different facets of identity worked together? To what extent are issues of race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, nationality, and ability addressed? To what degree have the economic and, more recently, the refugee crises impacted the intersectional consciousness, imagination, or actions of these movements and/or organizations? What are the power structures within and across movement alliances? How do European-level, national, and/or subnational institutions shape intersectional mobilizations and alliances? How have gender mainstreaming and diversity paradigms influenced intersectional agency/mobilization? In what ways have the economic and refugee crises impacted institutional contexts and political opportunities as well as resources for movements and alliances?
