This paper argues that Donald Trump has offered a far more traditional foreign policy than his campaign rhetoric and early proclamations promised. Rather than a revolution away from his immediate predecessors, Trump has, like them, worked within a cold war structure. In privileging domestic renewal, tough counter-terrorism, and great power rivalry he has advanced a predictable agenda, albeit using an unpredictable style. The paper concludes by considering, even at this early juncture, Trump’s place in a series of typologies of US foreign policy.
