Abstract

Parliamentary turnover is typically examined at the aggregate level. In this paper, sequence analysis is employed to examine the patterns and typologies of individual-level complete parliamentary careers. Once a series of career archetypes has been established they are then used to estimate the likelihood of different types of turnover: voluntary, involuntary, electoral defeat. Data collected on the population of MPs elected to the Canadian House of Commons for the period 1867-2015 is used to inform the analysis.
