Abstract

Democracy is starting to face a crisis that is more potent than any other before. The ‘nature crisis’- which is still brewing under the surface while giving us occasional glimpses of its destructive potency (e.g. Australian bushfires and now the global pandemic)- will homogenise societies where every individual will only think about survival. As we face a global pandemic today, all governments- from the most to the least democratic- are struggling to respond efficiently. That means that the future challenges will not discriminate based on regime types and in response people will not mobilise based on their identities (religious, ideological or otherwise) but based on their survival capacities (age, health, wealth and similar). Observing political leaders and their populaces from around the world, this paper discusses the prospects of a politically homogenous global society where identities will not matter as much as they do today. Consequently, the revival of the survivalist values will significantly shape democratic citizenship in the future.
