Abstract

Since the late 2010s, several Spanish political parties have started to implement e-voting as a new way to select candidates and party leaders and to promote internal referenda. Such new forms of political participation have required new internal regulations and, more particularly, new digital platforms able to allow it. To complicate things further, some parties (Podemos, PSOE) have also introduced such procedures as a binding criterion to make hard decisions. Hence, some of the key developments on Spanish politics at the regional and national level such as forming coalition governments are now adopted through binding e-voting procedures. This new phenomenon points out the relevance of exploring the basic guarantees of such e-procedures (security, verification process, data ownership and control) and to link them with the basic features of the parties trying to implement them (size, ideology…) in their platforms.
