Abstract

This paper addresses the issue of political attitudes toward immigration in post-communist societies in the eastern half of Europe. Empirical evidence from Serbia and Northern Macedonia (non-EU member countries) and Hungary and Poland (Eu member countries) provide support to the following research hypotheses: (1) these societies are still affected by the legacy of authoritarian regimes in what regard the openness to immigration, (2) legislation concerning immigration and human rights are (almost completely) misssing and/or it is reduced to the issue of providing shelter and surviving conditions to temporary immigration issues; (3) integrative models of immigant population have not been developed and/or tranferred from European countries which have operational and efficient models, like UK, France, Germany and Netherlands. Country case studies are presented in order to identify the problems with which these countries are confronting especially after COVID-19 challenge which put under high pressure the entire Europe and the world. Under these constraints, our pape aims at identifying the most relevant problems which could arise in case of continued immigration in spite of pandemics constraints.
