Abstract

This book traces the development of democracy as an idea, exploring the primary themes of democratic thought from its earliest origins to the present day. It puts forward an account of democratic theory that suggests its development is highly contextual, drawing links between the changing ways in which democracy has been understood, and the development of the institutions, practices and objects through which humans encounter the idea. The book brings new light to bear on both the development of democratic theory and the relationship between democracy as an idea and as a lived experience while providing an accessible account of democratic thought suitable for non-specialists.
