Abstract

In the last several decades, social movements have been increasingly using the digital sphere for communication and organisation. This is also true of the far right, with radical and extreme right organisations using the digital space, especially social media, for recruitment, building a collective identity, building solidarity, radicalising supporters, and normalisation of their views. Studies examining the far right online have often looked at one platform – such as Facebook, Gab, or Reddit – and have rarely compared the presentation of one group across various platforms. This study proposes to explore the extreme right’s strategies online by examining the social media presence of the Hungarian extreme right, comparing their content creation and dissemination on Telegram and Facebook. The analysis will use the case of the Hungarian Légió Hungária (Hungarian Legion), an extreme right organisation active across numerous digital platforms. This study hypothesises that extreme right organisations promote different types of identities depending on the social media platform, likely considering issues of deplatforming and attracting a sympathetic audience.
