Abstract

This paper introduces the long term research project assigned to two principle investigators , A.Mihr at Utrecht University (Netherlands) and C. Sriram at London University (UK) . In behalf of the research team I will present the preliminary examination of the impact of transitional justice (TJ) measures upon democratic institution building in societies emerging from conflict and authoritarian rule. More specifically, the research will seek to identify whether, and if so how, such TJ mechanisms contribute to, or impede, democratic institution-building. The research involves empirical, comparative country-based case studies in eight transitional societies as well as an assessment of democratic institution-building. The research seeks to contribute to scholarly literature on both TJ and democratic institution-building, and to develop insights for policymakers working on democracy promotion and justice in transitional and conflict-affected societies. The focus of this paper is to elaborate on mixed-method research (triangulation design), using qualitative and quantitative research methods to impact of TJ. At the same time it will look to what extend this reseach and assumption can lead in developing a comprehensive theory of TJ, e.g. based on transformation theories and theories of justice.
