This presentation provides an analysis of LGBTQ+ politics in Sweden, illustrating how the early cross-party consensus among left- and center-right parties on issues of representation, policy manifestos, and legislation has given way to renewed political conflict since 2015. The focus is on the intensifying debates over trans rights and the 2024 Gender Recognition Act, which have become central to Sweden’s political landscape. The presentation argues that the rise of the Sweden Democrats and the spread of anti-immigration discourse have introduced nationalist and "anti-gender" tropes into party debates, reshaping the political dynamics around LGBTQ+ issues. Despite these challenges, civil society organizations such as RFSL have continued to influence policy agendas, ensuring that LGBTQ+ rights remain a key focus in Sweden’s evolving political discourse.
