This panel presents a systematic, cross-national analysis of LGBTQ+ representation within European party politics. Using an integrated framework of descriptive, symbolic, and substantive representation, it examines party dynamics across five European countries - Germany, Italy, Sweden, Poland, and Hungary - Drawing on existing and newly assembled data, including profiles of LGBTQ+ politicians, party and parliamentary LGBTQ+ groups, manifestos, voting records, political speeches, public opinion, and social mobilization, the panel explores how party-family dynamics, public opinion, social movements, constitutional courts, and supranational actors interact to either advance or hinder sexual minority rights. By identifying both convergent patterns within party families and regional divergences, the panel has the ambition to reshape our understanding of how political parties mediate LGBTQ+ inclusion in an era of growing contention. The discussion will highlight key findings, methodological innovations, and implications for future research and policy.
