Abstract

This article examines the Congress Party (INC) in India and the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Turkey comparatively by assuming a party-politics perspective and analysing these parties as ‘establishment parties’. Such a comparative analysis could be useful as to how these parties position themselves as alternatives against autocratizing forces and how they cope with several malaises of democratic rule of our times. Extensive surveys of the relevant literatures and statistical analyses based on respected international databases underline that the INC and the CHP have many resemblances in their party formation and evolution, as well as regarding their struggle for democratic rule.
