Abstract

This panel will examine the future of democracy and prospects for democratization in hybrid regimes via a party politics perspective. It will mainly tackle the Turkish case, while also acknowledging comparative perspectives throughout the world. The Turkish case stands as a typical case of democratic backsliding in the comparative politics literature. While there are several valuable strands of research to this regard, there is still a dearth of research on the issue of party system and party institutionalization in such political settings. What is the maneuvering room for party members in such restricted atmospheres? What are opportunities for opposition parties against incumbents? What new party types could emerge in such hybrid settings? These are research questions that we will explore in our panel. The panel will hopefully offer novel perspectives to the party politics and democratization literatures. It will also be directly relevant to Section 43 (endorsed by the ECPR Standing Group on Political Parties). Particularly, the panel will be strongly in touch with the following themes: (1) parties’ strategies in defending democratic norms and (6) parties’ measures to strengthen democratic resilience.
