Abstract

Democratic principles and institutions are increasingly under threat across liberal democracies. Yet, many electoral campaigns mobilize voters seeking to protect democratic values and support democratic candidates, often heralding from diverse ideological stream and political families. This article addresses the conditions under which voters trade off ideological preferences to support democratic candidates in two-round elections. We use original individual level surveys covering two-round presidential elections in Europe, as well as original expert evaluations of presidential candidates.
