Abstract

This article argues that deliberative institutions can serve as a reliable mechanism for correcting public misperceptions about climate change not only through the provision of information, but also by mitigating the heightened negative emotions often triggered by exposure to corrective messages. We test this argument using a scenario-based survey experiment conducted with UK respondents (N=3000). Our findings advance understanding of the emotional mechanisms underlying misperception correction and contribute to the literature on the broader, upscaling effects of citizen-centred deliberative institutions and their influence on the wider public.
