Abstract

In this paper, we present an analysis of Georgian society following the declaration made by the Prime Minister of the government on 28 November 2024, which suspended all activities related to Georgia's accession to the European Union until 2028. The analysis is based on data collected through survey research involving a representative sample of 1,100 individuals, complemented by in-depth interviews conducted with twenty participants in Georgia during the spring of 2025. The interviewees comprised supporters of the opposition (ten) as well as government supporters (ten). The findings reveal a society characterised by divisions on numerous issues, yet also demonstrate areas of consensus on specific matters. A common feature across the surveyed population is a positive perception of the European Union and a general mistrust towards political institutions, including Georgian political parties. This indicates that the widespread discontent with the government among the populace does not necessarily equate to support for opposition parties. Additionally, it is noteworthy that the most trusted national institutions among respondents were the military and the Georgian Orthodox Church.
