This workshop examines the evolving landscape of gender gaps in political behaviour, focusing on lifecycle, period, and cohort dynamics. As societies progress and gender roles continue to shift, it is crucial to understand how these changes manifest in political participation, voting, policy preferences, values, and ideological placement across different age groups, cohorts, and periods, as well as national contexts. The workshop addresses key questions such as: How are political gender gaps related to life-cycle effects and life-course trajectories? What role do period effects play in shaping gaps over time? How do generational dynamics of social change influence political gender gaps?
The study of gender gaps in political behaviour has been a cornerstone of research for decades with Inglehart and Norris (2000, 2003) proposing a developmental theory that traces the evolution of these gender gaps across time, generations and societies. Recent research has highlighted the complexities when temporal factors are considered (eg Shorrocks 2018, Fraile & Sánchez‐Vítores 2020, Dassonneville 2021, van Ditmars 2023). Despite these advancements, a pressing need remains for a more nuanced understanding of how gender gaps in political behaviour intersect with temporal dimensions, including life-course processes, period effects, external shocks, and the generational dynamics of social change. In this endeavour, the workshop will enhance the discipline by offering a comprehensive examination of the interplay between gender and time-related factors that shape political behaviour. It will also allow for seeking advanced methodological approaches to study the intersection of gender and age, period and cohort effects, as well as illuminating cross-national comparisons to identify both common trends and country-specific patterns. This workshop will address these needs by bringing together scholars from various fields, fostering dialogue, and promoting innovative research approaches. The workshop also aims to engage participants in comparative analyses of the evolution of gender gaps across different countries and regions, fostering a global perspective on these issues. We will explore various perspectives on the role of socialisation processes, gender roles, secularisation, and other time-related factors in shaping political gender gaps. The workshop seeks to foster collaboration among researchers, encouraging the development of new theoretical frameworks and research agendas.
1: How does a time-sensitive perspective enhance our understanding of gender gaps?
2: How does a gendered perspective contribute to explaining life course, period, and generational gaps?
3: To what extent can differences between women and men in political behavior be attributed to time-related variables?
4: Which aspects of political gender gaps can be attributed to lifecycle effects, and which to cohort effects?
5: How do the socialization conditions of different cohorts affect the emergence and evolution of gender gaps?
