Announcing the winners of the 2023 Jacqui Briggs EPS Prize

Congratulations to Karin Dyrstad and Jonathon W. Moses of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) on winning the 2023 Jacqui Briggs EPS Prize for their article ‘Big data meets open political science: An empirical assessment of transparency standards 2008–2019’, published in EPS Volume 22.

Awarded annually since 2015 in partnership with Palgrave Macmillan, our Jacqui Briggs EPS Prize celebrates remarkable contributions to political science. Specifically, it recognises articles that enhance our understanding of emerging trends in political science or innovative approaches to teaching and learning in the profession.

In their winning piece, which is free to read via SpringerLink, Karin Dyrstad and Jonathon W. Moses use an impressive original dataset of 1,555 articles to explore the use of big data and increasing demands for research transparency.

Our winners

Karin Dyrstad

This paper started out as a little side project that grew out of proportions. Developing the research design was a lot of fun but quite tricky as we could not really build on pre-existing designs. I never imagined that we would win a prize! Being awarded the Jacqui Briggs EPS Prize is a great honour and inspiration.

Karin Dyrstad is a professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in the Faculty of Social and Education Sciences. Jonathon W. Moses

I knew and worked alongside Jacqui Briggs when she was an EPS editor, and I have always been a great admirer of her passion for the discipline and all the hard work she dedicated to advancing political science in Europe. Although Karin and I are colleagues, it is not often that we get an opportunity to work together: this project was a fun and fruitful exception!

For both reasons, it is a wonderful honour to have worked with Karin in an effort that was awarded a prize in Jacqui’s memory.

Jonathon W. Moses is a professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in the Department of Sociology and Political Science. His research focuses broadly on the impact of global economic integration on political sovereignty at various levels.

From our jury

Dyrstad and Moses’ research embodies the spirit of the Jacqui Briggs Award as recognition for enhancing our understanding of innovative trends in the discipline. Moreover, the article’s own expansive methodological approach provides a potential template for future studies similarly tasked with taking stock of the state of our discipline and sets an example in data transparency.

In sum, their article promises to be a meaningful and lasting contribution to our collective knowledge on these important topics.
