Editorial Vacancy – Reviews Editor (EPS)

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative political scientist with a passion for sharing and celebrating the very best new research across the discipline to join the editorial team of our professional journal, European Political Science (EPS).

About the journal

European Political Science (EPS) is an international journal which continues to grow in reputation, readership, and impact year on year (recording its highest Impact Factor to date of 2.436 in 2021). EPS presents articles that explore how the discipline is, can and ought to be and publishes across four broadly defined areas: research matters, including debates within the discipline, research projects, information sources and funding opportunities; professional matters such as career structures and prospects, external evaluation, higher education reforms and accreditation issues; doctoral training and teaching topics; and relations between academics and politicians, policy-makers, journalists and ordinary citizens.

EPS also includes more substantive pieces that provide a political science perspective on important current events. In addition to original articles, the journal publishes shorter notes, review articles and symposia, progress reports on lively areas of research, profiles of people in the profession, and book reviews.

Its interpretation of 'political science' is wide and encompasses comparative politics, political economy, international relations, public administration, political theory, European studies, and related disciplines.

Fiona Buckley will complete her term by 28 February 2023, so we are seeking a new Reviews Editor to join the journal from 1 March 2023, following a handover at the end of February.

About the role

Working closely with the other Editors, ECPR and the Publisher, the Reviews Editor will:

Develop and innovate the Reviews section of EPS to complement and support the broader aims for development and growth of the journal in terms of coverage, readership, and impact.
Using their international networks, proactively identify and commission reviews of new works published across the discipline, reflecting both established and emerging fields, new trends or areas of debate.
Evaluate the academic quality of all commissioned and independently submitted reviews, deciding which to accept for publication.
Decide which Reviews are to be published in each issue throughout the year, aiming to keep a regular supply of copy in hand.
Contribute to changes and innovations designed to increase the reach and impact of the journal.
Determine the composition of the editorial board and meet with them at least once a year.
Produce and then present to ECPR an annual report reviewing trends in submissions, published works and progress against agreed aims and objectives for development.
Develop and participate in activities that represent and raise the profile of the journal throughout the year, for example, the annual roundtable at the General Conference, selection of the Jacqui Briggs Prize, podcasts, etc.
Contribute to cross-portfolio projects initiated by ECPR when requested.
Demonstrate a commitment to improving equality, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion in ECPR’s publishing and related activities.
Take an active part in the professional debate about trends and standards in political science journals.

The role is for six years, starting 1 March 2023, with a review by the ECPR Publications Subcommittee at the mid-point.

About the applicant

We are seeking an energetic and enthusiastic political scientist with extensive international networks and a passion for sharing newly published work with the rest of the community.

Applications are welcomed from all sections of political science; successful applicants will be from an ECPR Member or Associate Member, or an institution which is committed to joining ECPR at least for the duration of the Editorship.

Institutional support

The editors are supported by a dedicated Editorial Coordinator (Anna Hubbard) who supports the peer review process and all aspects of the day-to-day running of the journal, including social media and marketing, liaison with the copyeditor, publisher and other ECPR departments.

The successful applicant will receive an annual editorial fee and a fund to cover travel expenses incurred in attending meetings related to the journal.
