Methods Market – Meet the Experts

Sebastian Koehler is Lecturer in Political Economy at the Department of Political Economy, King's College London and proud father of a lovely daughter. He had previously held positions at the Center for Data and Methods, University of Konstanz (2017-2021) and the Department of Government at the London School of Economics and Political Science (2014-2017).

Sebastian's main research interests are in Political Economy and Political Science. He focuses on understanding the role of institutions and their impact on strategic interactions in politics, in particular regarding lobbying, legislative politics, as well as bargaining and political decision-making. He emphasises a strong connection between formal theory and empirical analysis. Methodologically, he is interested in network analysis and methods of causal inference.

Susana Salgado is Principal Research Fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, where she coordinates competitively funded research projects and teaches at the PhD programme in Comparative Politics. She had previously held positions at the New University of Lisbon and at the University of Oxford, as well as visiting positions in Brazil, Italy, and Australia.

Susana’s main research interests include political communication, democracy and democratization processes, populism, as well as the impact of different types of media on democratic politics. Susana’s work has a strong interdisciplinary perspective, and her approaches to these topics have been mainly comparative and mixed methods.

Molly Andrews is an Honorary Professor of Political Psychology at the Social Research Institute, University College London, and co-director of the Association of Narrative Research and Practice (formerly the Centre for Narrative Research). She is currently a Writing Fellow at the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Studies, and in 2019–2020, was the Jane and Aatos Professor in Studies on Contemporary Society at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies.

Her monographs are Lifetimes of Commitment: Aging, Politics, Psychology and Shaping History: Narratives of Political Change (both Cambridge University Press), and Narrative Imagination and Everyday Life (Oxford University Press). She has co-edited Lines of Narrative (2000 Routledge Taylor & Francis), Considering Counter Narrative (2004 John Benjamins), Doing Narrative Research 2008/2013 Sage), What is Narrative Research (2014 Bloomsbury) and Routledge International Handbook on Narrative and Life History (2016 Routledge).

Molly serves on the Editorial Board of five journals which are published in four countries. Her publications have appeared in Chinese, German, Swedish, Spanish, French, Czech, German, Norwegian and Finnish. 

Erik P. Bucy is Regents Professor of Strategic Communication at Texas Tech University, where he teaches and conducts research on visual politics, nonverbal communication, and public opinion about the press.

He is the co-author of Image Bite Politics: News and the Visual Framing of Elections (with Maria Elizabeth Grabe) and is widely known for his studies on the influence of visuals in news and politics.

Daniel Ritter is Associate Professor of Sociology at Stockholm University, specializing in revolutions and social movements.

He received his doctoral training at the University of Texas at Austin and has held postdoctoral positions at the European University Institute in Florence and at Stockholm University.

Prior to returning to Stockholm University in 2016, he was Assistant Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham.

He is the author of The Iron Cage of Liberalism: International Politics and Unarmed Revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa (Oxford University Press, 2015), Social Movement and Civil War: When Protests for Democratization Fail together with Donatella della Porta, Teije Hidde Donker, Bogumila Hall, and Emin Poljarevic (Routledge, 2018), and On Revolutions: Unruly Politics in the Contemporary World, co-authored with Colin Beck, Mlada Bukovansky, Erica Chenoweth, George Lawson, and Sharon Nepstad (Oxford University Press, 2022). In 2017, he was the recipient of Stockholm University's "Award for Good Teaching."

Wouter Wolfs is a Lecturer and Senior Researcher at the Public Governance Institute of the KU Leuven. His research is focused on EU politics, political finance, the organisation of political parties and parliaments, and legislative capacity-building. He is an experienced tutor and has applied a process tracing methodology multiple times in his own research.

Bruno Cautrès is attached to CEVIPOF – Centre de recherches politiques de Sciences Po (Paris), at the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques in Paris.

He is a senior CNRS research fellow with interests in voting behaviour, political attitudes and behaviours, comparative survey research and quantitative techniques.

Bruno is involved in a variety of projects, including the European Social Survey, European Values Studies, International Social Survey Programme and European elections studies; and he participates in the development of elections studies in France. His current research programme concerns political trust and attitudes to democracy in France.

Silvia Fierăscu holds a PhD in Comparative Politics and Network Science from Central European University.

Her research focuses primarily on quality of governance, political-business relations, and statistical analyses of network data.

Silvia is involved in various interdisciplinary projects, translating complex problems into real-time applications for organisational management, political communication, and better governance.

Daniel Kovarek is a postdoctoral research fellow at the European University Institute. He studies political behaviour at the voter and the elite level; his expertise lies in the intersection of political geography and distributive politics. Within the context of the ERC SOLID project, he looks at how crises affect European integration using a variety of quantitative models. Daniel has been teaching a wide variety of graduate-level courses on applied statistics, research design and programming at Central European University and colleges of Corvinus University of Budapest. His research has appeared in Research & Politics, The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science and Environmental Politics, among others.

Akos Mate is a research fellow at the Centre for Social Sciences in Hungary. His key research area is the political economy of the European Union and its members’ fiscal governance.

He uses a wide variety of methods in his research, particularly automated text analysis (and attached various machine learning approaches), network analysis and more traditional econometric techniques.

Bart Meuleman is a Full Professor at the Centre for Sociological Research, KU Leuven (Belgium).

His research focuses on cultural and socio-economic conflict lines in increasingly diverse societies. He has studied the structure and roots of intergroup attitudes, and ethnic threat perceptions and prejudices, from a majority and a minority perspective. He is particularly interested in how increasing migration movements and ethnic diversity affect preferences for welfare redistribution and social justice.

Bart's methodological research interests include comparative survey analysis, attitude measurement, structural equation modelling and multilevel models.

Bart is the National Coordinator of ESS Belgium, co-supervisor of the Belgian National Elections Study and the Belgian Ethnic Minority Elections Study 2014 and 2019, and a member of the Methodology Group of the European Values Study.

Cristina Mitrea is an Associate Professor of Sociology. She earned her PhD in political science at Central European University.

Her research interests lie in the fields of political behaviour and political socialisation.

Alexandru Moise is a postdoctoral researcher at the European University Institute (2020–2025). He received his PhD in political science from Central European University in 2019. Alex's research focus is the political economy of welfare reforms. He looks at how individual perceptions and the quality of party linkages affect health care policy. Within the context of the ERC SOLID project, he looks at how crises affect European integration using a variety of quantitative models. He has been teaching quantitative analysis courses at Johns Hopkins University, the European University Institute, Central European University, Ilija University, and the ECPR’s Summer and Winter Schools for many years.

Marie-Hélène teaches qualitative research methods at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) and is a freelance methodologist in qualitative data analysis. She was educated in Quebec, Beirut and Oxford where she read social work. A clinician by training, she worked as a mental health officer in humanitarian missions for MSF, MDM and UNWRA in psychosocial aid programs for survivors of war trauma in East Africa and the Middle East. Her clinical work led her to research the harm that INGOs can do in the name of doing good when imposing Western paradigms in culturally and politically different contexts.

Marie-Hélène is an NVivo Certified Platinum Trainer and is a member of the NVivo Core Trainer Team who teaches the NVivo online courses. She is a sought-after methodologist who has taught qualitative data analysis in more than sixty universities and research centres worldwide, in countries including Qatar and Iran. Since 2009, Marie-Hélène has taught the introductory and advanced courses in qualitative data analysis at the ECPR Methods School and teaches similar courses at the IPSA-NUS Summer School in Singapore. Her methodological interests range from advances in qualitative data analysis, qualitative evidence synthesis, decolonising epistemology and participatory methodologies.

Julia Partheymüller is a Senior Scientist at the Department of Government at the University of Vienna. 

Julia possesses extensive experience in survey design, being an integral member of the team of the Austrian National Election Study (AUTNES). She has contributed to various other projects involving large-scale survey data collection, including the Austrian Corona Panel Project (ACPP), Reconciling Europe with its Citizens through Democracy and Rule of Law (RECONNECT), and the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES).

Her research focuses on the nature and origins of public perceptions, attitudes, and behaviours, with a strong emphasis on quantitative methods. She is particularly interested in refining measurement techniques and leveraging the potential of longitudinal and experimental survey designs to enhance causal inference.

Vicente Valentim is Postdoctoral Prize Research Fellow at Nuffield College, University of Oxford.

He earned his PhD from the European University Institute in 2021. Vicente studies how democracies generate norms against behaviour associated with authoritarianism, how those norms are sustained, and how they erode. He also has a keen interest in political methodology–especially causal inference methods.

Vicente’s work has been published or accepted in journals like the Journal of Politics, British Journal of Political Science, or Comparative Political Studies. It has been awarded the GESIS Klingemann Prize for best CSES Scholarship and the EUI Linz-Rokkan Prize for best thesis in Political Sociology. Read more about Vicente and his work.

Annemarie Walter is an Assistant Professor in the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham. She obtained her PhD in political science from the University of Amsterdam.

Her research interests are parties’ campaign strategies, elite (moral) decision-making, misperceptions and conspiracy beliefs and voters’ responses to politicians’ transgressions. Her work has been published in international journals such as Political Communication, Political Behaviour and Political Psychology. Her most recent book is an edited volume entitled Political Incivility in the Parliamentary, Electoral and Media Arena: Crossing Boundaries.

Her research is based on data collected by conducting survey questionnaires, online survey-embedded experiments, content analysis, (elite) interviews and archival research. She has ample experience interviewing campaign managers, politicians, bureaucrats, and journalists.
