Academic Programme and Courses


Which types of courses are on offer at the ECPR Winter School in Methods and Techniques?

The programme consists of two-day short Preparatory courses (7.5 teaching hours), and four types of one-week Main courses, as detailed below (15 teaching hours). 

Short Preparatory courses: Offer a quick introduction or ‘refresher’ to tools that will be useful for further courses. Typically: software training, before taking a data analysis course.

Main courses

Research design/fundamentals course: An ‘upstream’ course enabling you to think about your research more broadly, so you can make more informed choices about specific methods/techniques.

Data collection/generation course: A hands-on course focused on a specific method (or family of methods) for data collection or generation.

Data analysis course (introductory): A hands-on course focused on a specific method (or family of methods) for data analysis, bringing you to a level of well-informed use.

Data analysis course (advanced): A hands-on course focused on a specific method (or family of methods) for data analysis, bringing you to an expert level, including more recent refinements.

Is there a limit to the number of courses I can take at the WSMT?

Yes. Each participant may attend one Preparatory plus one Main course.

When do I need to pay my course fees?

Within 15 working days of your registration. Registrations after 26 January 2016 will require full payment within 24 hours via credit or debit card from the ECPR website. Please note that your place on the course will not be guaranteed until payment has been received in full. Please allow extra time for this if you are paying by bank transfer. Your payment due date is stated on your invoice, which you can access via your MyECPR account My Invoices. You can also pay directly by credit or debit card directly from the website. Full details of course fees and payment can be found on the course fee page.

Does the course fee include accommodation?

The fee is for the course(s) only. We have negotiated special deals for WSMT participants. Please see the Accommodation Information page.

When should I book my travel?

Please do not book travel or accommodation until you have been notified by ECPR that your course(s) are confirmed. This happens as soon as the course reaches a sufficient number of registered and paid participants and will be no later than 8 January 2016.

Once I have paid will I receive confirmation of my registration?

Yes, we will send you a confirmation by email to the email address used for your registration. If you have more than one ECPR profile please make a note of the email address used when logging in to register. It greatly helps the ECPR if you only have one ECPR account.

When is the deadline for registration?

Midnight on Monday 25 January 2016. You can still register after 25 January but we cannot guarantee you will be given a place on the course you are interested in as it may be fully booked. Registrations after 25 January 2016 require full payment within 24 hours via credit or debit card through the ECPR website.

Is there a waiting list for fully-booked courses?

Yes. You will be notified on a first come, first served basis if a place becomes available. To be placed on a waiting list, please email methodsschool@ecpr.eu.

When will I receive the reading material?

Reading material for the course is detailed in the course outline. Some reading material will be uploaded onto the online virtual campus, from mid-January 2016, however you will need to purchase or source the remainder yourself.  You may wish to clarify the specifics for your course with your Instructor.

I have already registered but would like to change my course selection. What should I do?

You can change courses if there is a space available but this will incur a €25 administration charge.

Will I receive a certificate of attendance?

Yes. Provided you attend 80% of the course hours, you will be given a certificate of attendance for each course attended. If you leave before certificates are issued email Wolgang Goldbach who will send you a copy.

Preparatory courses finish on Saturday 27 February 14:30 and Main courses finish Friday 4 March 17:30.

A detailed course timetable will be issued in January. Once all of the courses have been confirmed no later than 8 January 2016, the academic timetable will be published on the Winter School home page and the virtual campus, where you can check if your course finishes earlier. Please note, even if Instructors have indicated a time preferences in their course outline, the ECPR cannot guarantee courses will take place at these times until the official timetable is published.

Where will the ECPR Winter School take place?

The 2015 Winter School will be hosted by the Bamberg Graduate School of Social Sciences (BAGSS), Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, Feldkirchenstr. 21, 96052 Bamberg. Registration and most classes are located at the Faculty, which is easily reached from the city centre by bus. Maps and directions are on the Winter School home page and will be uploaded to the virtual campus.

How will participants be accommodated?

We ask participants to organise their own accommodation, see the Accommodation Information page. The University of Bamberg has agreed a special discounted rate for Winter School participants at the Youth Hostel ‘Am Kaulberg’.
