Know Before You Go

We've created this handy guide to help you every step of your Virtual General Conference experience – from recording your Paper presentation, to joining live sessions, to making the most of your participation. Please make sure to review this guide carefully before the conference starts.

Get started

You have the option to pre-record your Paper presentation in advance of the conference, making it more accessible for those who can’t attend your scheduled Panel session.

Before uploading:
  • Your video should be recorded as a narrated slide presentation. Example here: (add example)
  • Make sure your video is no longer than 10 minutes
  • Choose a quiet location, if possible
  • Make sure your video is saved in one of the following formats: .MOV, .MPEG4, .MP4, .AVI, .WMV, .MPEGPS, .FLV, 3GPP, WebM, DNxHR, ProRes, CineForm, HEVC (h265)
How to upload:
  • Name your video as followed: Panel Number_ Last Name. For example: P021_Smith
  • Upload your file to OneDrive here, and using the password ... 
  • Upload deadline: Thursday 12 August, midnight BST

Once uploaded, we'll make your video available to view on demand.

NB: By uploading your video, you consent that it will be made available to all users of the ECPR website and accessible via search engines. If you don't agree with this, please refrain from uploading your video.

Good to know
  • Accepted Papers may be uploaded via your My ECPR account from Friday 9 April 2021.
  • Only the person listed as Presenter can upload the Paper.
  • Papers should be uploaded in PDF format, in English.
  • By uploading your Paper to the My ECPR system, you give ECPR the right to publish it on its website.
To upload your Paper
  1. Go to 'My Events' in your My ECPR account.
  2. Click 'Full details' under General Conference Virtual Event (2021).
  3. Click 'Manage Paper' > Browse > Select your Paper > Open/OK > Upload > View Document (to ensure that it has been uploaded successfully).
  4. You can also use this facility to replace your Paper or remove it after the Conference. Simply select 'Remove Document'.
Prefer for your Paper not to be in the public domain?
  • Email it to your Panel Chair and Discussant before *instert deadline*
  • You can find them by searching for the Panel via he Academic Programme or by expanding your Paper details through My Events (follow instruction 1 and 2 above, then click the arrow to the left of your Paper title and 'full details' next to the Panel details); the names will be hyperlinked with their email addresses.

Make joining sessions simple by adding everything you plan to attend to your Itinerary. For security reasons, links are individual for each session.

  • How to add Simply click 'Add to Itinerary' beside each session in the Timetable.
  • How to access Your itinerary is available through the My Events section in My ECPR.
  • Note Times are displayed in British Summer Time (BST).

We think that everyone deserves a positive event experience. Please take a few moments to read our Code of Conduct which outlines our expectations regarding the conduct of participants at all our events.

  • The Conference will run on the Zoom platform.
  • Before joining, familiarise yourself with features you may need to use – mute / unmute microphone, stop / start video, share screen, naming / renaming yourself, adding a virtual background, chat and the 'raise hand' feature

Get ready

  • Make sure you are in a well-lit area
  • Choose a quiet location and a neutral background, or use one of our virtual backgrounds instead. Just visit this page in Canvas, click on your preferred image and select 'download' at the top.
  • Put your camera at face level
  • Position yourself so that most of the light is coming from in front of you
  • Consider using a headset
  • Use cable internet connection or position yourself close to the router
  • If your internet connection becomes unstable, turn off your video
  • Removing a virtual background will also improve your device performance
  • Join on time
  • If you are happy to be identified, make sure your name is clearly indicated in Zoom. Use the Rename function to adjust
  • If you want other people to see you, keep your camera on
  • Be mindful of your camera and try to avoid being distracted by other tasks
  • Mute yourself when not speaking
  • Use 'raise hand' or chat features in Zoom to ask a question

Can't attend?

To avoid Panels collapsing and help us deliver the best conference experience to your fellow scholars, please let us know as soon as possible. Even with short-notice cancellations, Panel and Section Chairs can often rearrange schedules, so it's always worth informing us.

Talk about accessing headline session recordings? 

Notice of photography/filming

ECPR may record all events in the form of photography, screen capture, filming, and audio recording of interactions such as discussions in Roundtables and Panels. This media may be used by us to promote ECPR activities. These activities may include publishing it at ecpr.eu, or using it in digital and email marketing, on social media, and in other promotional materials. If you do not want to appear in such media, please turn off your video and remove your name during Roundtables and Panel sessions. If you or any other participant want to take a screen capture for personal use, such as sharing on social media, you / they should request permission from the session Chair.
