Abstract

This Panel seeks to explore the consequences of increasing contestation for IO institutional development and resilience. To what extent are IOs declining as a consequence by losing members, vital resources, or autonomy, and are they still able to produce quality output? Does crisis eventually lead to IO death, because states may decide to completely disband or replace existing institutions? Or does crisis actually prompt states to renegotiate treaties to adapt cooperation to changing realities and induce revitalization? Papers in this Panel present ongoing research on these questions, also from the perspective of the role of IO institutional characteristics and IO bureaucracies to avert decline or death.
