Abstract

Globalization affects the development of regions with varying degrees, brings more volatility for nation states through international market integration and induces risks on the individual level. This panel aims to shed new light on the implications coming from globalization that directly affect labor markets, welfare states and individuals in general through trade, investment and migration. How do different forms of globalization affect peoples’ perceptions, preferences and lives? What are the effects of migration on the population in the recipient as well as the country of origin? What are the roles of trade and investment in world-market embedded economies and their labor market? In this panel, we cover public opinion as well as macro-level data and use advanced empirical strategies investigating different world regions (Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe). We contribute to contemporary debates on large international processes, firstly, by discussing international investment and its effects on working conditions, followed by a contribution on trade risk and its implications for the welfare state, disaggregating different groups of workers. The focus on the welfare state is investigated further through a survey experiment on welfare chauvinism towards different migrant groups in Germany, and finally migrants are examined as a source of social protection through remittances.
