This panel addresses the consequences of the interconnectedness between agriculture and food policy on the one hand and a range of interrelated policies on the other hand – e.g. environmental policies and trade policies – by empirically investigating governance arrangements aimed at connecting different sectors or policy goals. The papers in this panel: 1) each investigate a separate policy that can be placed at the nexus between food and agricultural policy and policy goals of sustainability and quality; 2) take an institutional perspective to investigate how the design of procedures and institutions affect the shape and effectiveness of these policies; and 3) apply an agency perspective that emphasizes the mobilization and participation of (new) non-farm actors and/or the cooperative arrangements between governmental and non-governmental actors. Taken together, these contributions seek to shed light on how different institutions and governance arrangements can contribute to successful policy integration. The panel thus generates knowledge that aids institutional design and developing governance arrangements that are conducive to making the transition towards sustainable agriculture.
