Many commentators have claimed that the covid crisis might be a game changer for our societies. But is there sufficient evidence for this claim to be found in political science research? In this roundtable we explore how the covid crisis might or might not reshape politics across Western Europe, focusing on politics at the national and EU level. It will touch upon how the crisis affects citizens, parties, and party systems, and examines whether the post-covid era might see different dynamics, for example, between government and opposition, between mainstream and niche parties, and between populists and non-populists. It covers developments in a range of West European countries, including Denmark, the Netherland, and the United Kingdom.
