Abstract

Over the past two decades, European integration has become an increasingly contentious issue and has been met with fierce public criticism and resistance. The current sovereign debt crisis puts the integration project - and steps towards further European economic governance - under further political scrutiny. This panel seeks to develop a better understanding of the factors explaining support for European integration, European identity, and European solidarity in the crisis, as well as their interlinkages. To what extent are current trends in EU support restricted to the crisis, or do they reflect more general patterns of orientations towards European integration? This panel invites contributions that seek to analyse and explain public orientations towards European integration across Europe, across policy areas and over time. Contributions that put the ramifications of the current crisis in the broader context of historical developments of EU support are especially welcome.
