Abstract

This panel brings together leading international scholars in financial regulation and central banking to explore historical and contemporary developments in the field. This is particularly timely given that the financial system has experienced another period of unprecedented instability triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. The panel will showcase different methodological approaches, including interview-based process tracing, congruence analysis, elite surveys and survey experiments. The papers will address three broad themes which speak to wider debates in regulatory governance: the extent, limitations and gaps in the current financial regulatory architecture (paper by James & Quaglia); the role and market power of the EU as a global financial regulator (Posner & Quaglia); and the politics and accountability of the European Central Bank (Moschella et al.).
