Abstract

This panel addresses the role of trust in regulation from new and innovative perspectives. Scholarship has shown that trust by regulatees in regulators plays a crucial role for compliance, non-binding forms of regulation, rule acceptance, the legitimacy of regulation, formal and informal forms of accountability, and so on. However, this panel invites papers that think “outside the box” when approaching the role of trust in regulation. For example, we invite papers that conceive of trust as a reciprocal relationship, including also trust of regulators in regulatees, and that conceptualize the role of regulatory intermediaries. Moreover, we invite papers that empirically analyze trust in a systematic comparative manner across countries, sectors, regions, and so on. In addition, we invite papers that analyze the role of trust in policy sectors where it has hitherto been less prominently addressed, such as EU fiscal, algorithmic, or energy regulation. Any other forms of fresh thinking about trust in regulation, be it conceptual, theoretical, or empirical papers, are welcome.
